Science Experiment Objectives: In my second grade classroom we are learning how to make and test predictions about sinking and floating. Students also classified objects according to whether they would sink or float.
Overview:
In this lesson, students will determine whether various objects will sink of float in water. There will be two main factors that determine this and they are density and buoyancy. The students do not need to explain why objects sink or float, rather, they are being encouraged to observe objects that will float or will sink everytime in water. Children will discover based on their predictions if they were correct or not. They will also see there is a consistency in the way the objects behave. This will help allow students to come up with their own ideas about physical properties and how they can be used when describing and categorizing objects.
